The U.S. Department of Justice has announced the formation of Joint Task Force October 7 (JTF 10-7), an initiative focused on investigating and prosecuting individuals responsible for the October 7, 2023, attack in Israel. The task force will also examine related threats, including the financing of Hamas and affiliated groups.
Attorney General Pamela Bondi, who established JTF 10-7 on her first day in office, stated that the initiative underscores the department’s commitment to pursuing justice for the victims. The attack, carried out by Hamas, resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people, including 47 U.S. citizens. Around 250 individuals were abducted, including eight Americans.
JTF 10-7 will prioritize identifying and prosecuting those directly involved in the attack, as well as investigating financial networks and external support for Hamas and affiliated organizations. It will also address related acts of terrorism and civil rights violations.
Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche emphasized that the U.S. government remains committed to holding accountable those responsible for terrorist acts. FBI Director Kash Patel described the task force as a collaborative effort between federal and international partners to strengthen counterterrorism initiatives.
The task force will be led by senior officials from the Justice Department’s National Security Division and the FBI, along with experts in counterterrorism, financial crimes, and victim services. The FBI will also coordinate with international partners, embedding agents with Israel’s National Bureau of Counter Terror Finance to support ongoing investigations.
JTF 10-7 will operate primarily out of Virginia, with personnel including analysts, forensic accountants, and linguists. The Justice Department has stated that the task force will work to dismantle Hamas’s operational networks, investigate financial support systems, and ensure justice for victims of the attack.
