New York State’s annual spring burn ban is now in effect, running from March 16 through May 14. The seasonal restriction aims to reduce the risk of wildfires, which are most common in the spring when dry conditions make open burning particularly hazardous.
According to state officials, open burning is the leading cause of wildfires in New York. Since the ban was first implemented in 2009, the number of spring wildfires has decreased by nearly 43%.
Residents are encouraged to check local fire danger levels before engaging in any outdoor activities that could pose a fire risk. The state provides a Fire Danger Map for real-time updates. More details about the statewide burn ban can be found here.
Violations of the burn ban can result in fines, and officials urge the public to comply with the regulations to help protect communities and natural areas from potential wildfires.
